Do Bangkok clubs close at 2 am or 4 am?
There is no single closing time for every club. TAT's published rule allows licensed entertainment venues in designated tourist areas, and in legally registered hotels nationwide, to operate until 4 am. The permission depends on the location and licence; it does not mean every Bangkok bar opens that late. Ask the venue for its current opening hours and last admission on your date, and arrange your return journey accordingly. Special dates can have different arrangements.

Are bars closed on Buddhist holidays and election days?
Alcohol restrictions can apply during religious holidays, elections and other officially announced periods. A restriction on alcohol sales does not necessarily mean every restaurant or venue is closed. Exemptions and permitted service depend on the announcement and the venue's licence. Check local official notices and ask the venue to confirm its programme and service for the exact date. Do not assume that a tourist district or hotel automatically has an exemption, or that a previous year's arrangements still apply.

Is the old 2 pm–5 pm alcohol-sales restriction still in place?
TAT's 29 May 2026 update confirms general alcohol-sales hours of 11 am to midnight, including the afternoon period that was previously restricted. Separate conditions can apply to licensed hotels, entertainment venues, international airports and approved event spaces. Restrictions on age, places of consumption and officially announced dry periods still apply. Follow the current rules and staff guidance at the venue instead of an old travel-guide timetable.

Will nightlife continue during an official mourning period?
Read the announcement for that particular period. Following the 2025 royal bereavement, TAT stated that there was no blanket suspension of entertainment or business, while asking organisers to adapt activities respectfully. That does not guarantee another period will work the same way. Individual events can be postponed, reduced or cancelled. Check the organiser's latest notice before travelling, and respect any guidance on dress and conduct.

Can I use cannabis at a Thai bar, club or rooftop?
Do not treat cannabis as a recreational nightlife activity. Current official travel guidance restricts its use to medical purposes with a Thai-issued prescription. A shop being open does not make every purchase or use lawful. Follow local law and the venue's rules; do not take cannabis across a border or assume a prescription from home is sufficient. Check current official guidance before your trip, because Thailand's rules have changed in recent years.
