Safety & Getting Home — Thailand Nightlife FAQs

Choose a question to read the answer. Find practical details, exceptions and sources for your night out.

How can a solo traveller, including a woman travelling alone, plan a night out?

Choose a public venue with clear entry information, tell someone your plans and arrange a reliable ride home before the night starts. A hosted event or accommodation group can make the first visit easier. Keep your phone charged, watch your drink and valuables, and avoid isolated routes alone after dark. Leave if you feel uncomfortable and ask staff for help. You do not need to drink or stay with new acquaintances to take part. Do not ride a scooter or drive after drinking.

What should I know about drink spiking and methanol?

Drink spiking and methanol poisoning are recognised travel risks. Keep your drink in sight, avoid accepting an open drink from a stranger, and use reputable licensed venues. Methanol cannot reliably be detected by taste or smell. Seek urgent medical care if you feel unusually unwell after drinking, and tell staff or a trusted companion so you are not left alone. These precautions do not imply that a particular venue or individual has caused harm.

How can I avoid unexpected bills and other problems on a night out?

Read the menu and agree table, admission and service charges before ordering. Keep your receipts and a record of the booking, check change, and keep your bank card in sight. Be cautious if a new online contact pressures you to choose one unfamiliar venue or pay immediately. Ask calmly for an itemised bill; if a dispute becomes threatening, move to a safe place and contact Tourist Police on 1155. Do not buy or bring a vape: Thailand prohibits vaping devices, including for tourists.

What should I check for when it comes to venue safety and emergency exits?

When you enter, notice the marked exits and keep a clear route to them. If the room feels overcrowded, access is blocked or you cannot identify a way out, ask staff and choose another venue if necessary. Outdoor spaces can still have crowd and weather risks. In an emergency, follow staff and emergency-service instructions and leave belongings behind. A listing or photograph is not a safety inspection or guarantee.
